Chapora fort is located northern Goa overlooking the Vagator beach. This massive fort is constructed out of red laterite stones and was constructed by the king of Bijapur, Adil Shah. This is one reason why it has been named Shahpura, which means the 'town of Shah'. The Chapora fort is located at a distance of about ten kilometers from Mapusa and can be reached via renting a taxi or an auto from Mapusa. One can also hire buses from Panaji that ply towards Chapora fort onto a frequent basis.

The Chapora fort is a very popular tourist attraction of Goa, being situated close to the Vagator beach. From the fort one can get a commanding view of the Vagator beach, Ozran Beach, Morjim Beach and the mouth of Chapora river. The shooting of the Hindi bollywood movie Dil Chahata Hai was at the fort also added to the forts popularity. The fort has wide walls with ramparts over which one can walk and go around the fort. The walls are lined with arrow slits, gun ports and murder holes at regular intervals.

The fort can be reached by road from Mapusa. To reach here one has to take the road branching to the right just two kilometers before the Vagator beach. A small road leads to the base of a hill atop which the fort lies. Tourists can also reach the fort by climbing the hill from Vagator beach.

The Chapora fort was constructed fundamentally towards keep monitor onto lots Hindu raiders and plunderers whom arrived towards establish their region across Goa.The fort was nearly ruined during Nadir shah's rule and was restored to its original glory by the Portuguese in 1617. After the Portuguese deserted the fort, it became desolate and barren and has become a place of tourist attraction. The fort has withstood the ravages of time and offers panoramic views of the Anjuna and Vagator beaches. Majority of the tourists who visit Goa do not fail to make a trip to the Chapora fort as they want to feel the mystical air and enjoy the breathtaking views from the parapet of the fort.
